"Omoide Poroporo" - A little introduction on how things came to be.

Our names are Peter & Bárbara. Living in the city of Veenendaal (Netherlands) together with our daughter Olivia—we are the proud and happy owners of six Japanese Akita Inu: Junya, Chihiro, Maru, Hime, Momo and Mimi.

Spending our professional lives in account management & children’s education, our private life brings us—surprise, surprise—having lots of fun with our dogs.

The latter is a passion that started back in 2009, the year before Junya stole Peter’s heart as a puppy. During one of his stays in Japan, he found out that the neighbors of the ryokan he was staying had a male Akita Inu. It was a simple, though life-changing meeting. And one that felt far from a coincidence.

Truth be told, as a kid Peter initially longed to own a Siberian Husky. That idea was given a quick no-go by his parents though, explaining they needed lots of exercise and that this would not combine with a then busy sports life. Of course, at that time all of us were still oblivious, being unaware a breed like the Japanese Akita Inu even existed.

That was all about to change though, when Peter became a film journalist in his twenties. What initially started with some news coverage on the works of Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao—known for example for Academy Award winner Spirited Away—somehow led to exclusive one-on-one interviews, being picked up by news papers like New York Times and the Guardian and becoming one of the “leading voices in global cinema” for Twitch. The number of interviews with Japanese directors, as well as connections and friends in Japan continued to grow, making that eventual run into the Akita Inu breed in the land of origin inevitable, bringing us back to that first meeting mentioned earlier...

Fast-forward a good number of years, during which Junya became an ever-important part of our life. And as the saying goes “Once Akita Inu, Always Akita Inu!”, the love for this breed steadily developed and Chihiro joined the pack not much later on. Grown up into an adult, she finally enabled us to open the doors of Kurenai No Kaze, our way to give back to the breed.

In our case, that does not mean just breeding a litter every once in a while though. As cliché as it will sound, knowledge is indeed power, which is why multiple times each year we are found in Japan for exhibitions, to visit breeders and to learn under the direct tutelage of longtime breed experts like AKIHO Director of Judging Saitou Akira.

But enough about us. Please wander around our website to find out more about this great breed, our dogs and wish to combine looks, health and love.
